Microsoft Slashes Price Of The Surface RT

If you’ve been on the lookout for a Windows 8 tablet, you’re in for a nice surprise. Microsoft took the decision to slash a massive £130 off the Microsoft Surface RT bringing it down from £399 to £279 for the 32GB model. Why? This article from The Next Web outlines that it could be a strategy to boost sales, since the RT version hasn’t been selling as well as Microsoft would have liked. That’s probably down to the fact that its older brother, the Surface Pro is more appealing since it offers complete desktop functionality (click here for a breakdown of the differences between them).

CNET on the other hand mention that the Surface is due for an update, with rumours suggesting the inclusion of new Snapdragon processors and 4G connectivity.

Whatever the reason, the price drop makes this tablet more affordable than ever and creates a tougher decision when choosing between competition like the iPad, which is priced at £130 more than the Microsoft Surface – and that’s for the base 16GB model!

What You Get For Your Money

The Not So Great

Like most tablets, the Surface RT runs on an app ecosystem, meaning you can’t run it like a normal computer. For that, you’d have to splash out on the Surface Pro. You also have to deal with a screen resolution that’s inferior to both the Pro and the retina displays from Apple.

The Good

On the plus side, if you’re after something to surf the web, check emails and do work with; the Surface will be the bargain of the year for you. With access to the Microsoft Office essentials like Word, Excel & PowerPoint plus an optional attachable keyboard, the Surface RT becomes an excellent piece of tech for productivity and if you’re already a Windows user, you won’t need to spend time getting familiarised with the interface.
