How To: Archive Mail On Mac OS X With A Keyboard Shortcut

If you want a way to quickly and easily archive mail on Mac OS X with the press of a button (or two, or three), here’s how.

Sifting through endless amounts of mail isn’t fun, and having to navigate the main OS X menu bar to archive something each time makes it an even more daunting task. The Mail client on Mac doesn’t have a dedicated keyboard shortcut for archiving, so after getting used to that functionality on other mail clients, I decided to configure my own little shortcut for the Mail client on Mac OS X.

If you want a way to quickly and easily archive mail with the press of a button (or two, or three), here’s how:

  1. Head over to your System Preferences, either via Spotlight or just click on the Apple logo on the top left of the screen.
  2. Under System Preferences, click on the Keyboard category.
  3. Click on the Shortcuts tab.
  4. Now select the App Shortcuts category, found under the left column.
  5. Click on the +, at the bottom of that column.
  6. From the Application: menu, select Mail.
  7. Under Menu Title, type: Archive.
  8. In the Keyboard Shortcut field, type in the keyboard shortcut you’d like to use. Since Command + A selects all the emails in your inbox, I used Command + Shift + A, but feel free to use whatever suits you.
  9. Click on Add and close the window.
